Subject: SE DSIG STATUS (Jan 6, 2003)

SE DSIG,

The following is a brief update of the SE DSIG activities as of January 6, 2003. Please refer to the SE DSIG site at http://syseng.omg.org for additional information on SE DSIG.

At the Washington OMG meeting on November 20 - 21, we reviewed the preliminary requirements for the SE UML Profile RFP, and several comments were provided. We are in the process of updating the requirements based on those comments and futher refinements. Our major focus is to complete the requirements, and incorporate them into the RFP for issue at the Orlando Meeting at the end of March 2003. Roger Burkhart is preparing the draft RFP in accordance with the OMG RFP guidelines. The following is our planned schedule for the first quarter of 2003 to reach the RFP issue milestone.

- Review SE UML definitions with AP-233 team - Jan 10

- Update SE UML requirements and include in draft RFP - Jan 20

- Review draft RFP V0.5 with SE DSIG - Jan 27-28 (at OMG mtg in Burlingame)

- Review updated draft RFP V0.7 with INCOSE - Feb 4-5 (at INCOSE IW mtg in

Tampa)

- Submit RFP V0.9 to OMG - Mar 3 (3 weeks prior to Orlando mtg)

- Review and finalize RFP V1.0 - Mar 24 (at OMG mtg in Orlando)

- OMG vote to issue RFP - Mar 28 (at OMG mtg in Orlando) Initial responses with proposed solutions to the RFP will be expected by January 2004.

We need your full participation as we proceed to the issuance of the RFP. Please plan to participate in the upcoming meetings. I have attached the latest information for the Burlingame, CA meeting below (Burlingame is near San Francisco). Hotel reservations must be made by January 10.

If you are unable to make the Burlingame meeting, try to attend the INCOSE IW review in Tampa. The review will be held on Feb 4-5. Information on the INCOSE IW meeting can be found at the INCOSE website at http://www.incose.org.

Jim U'ren, Chair of the ISO AP-233 Working Group is hosting the telecon this Friday to review and reconcile selected SE UML definitions with some of the semantic dictionary definitions. Please contact Jim at juren@jpl.nasa.gov for telecon information.

We have continued our collaboration activity with UML 2 Submission Teams. In particular, we have been working closely with Cris Kobryn and other members of the U2P team, to help assess how their proposal is addressing SE needs. We have a had a series of telecons. Information on SE Inputs to U2P can be found at the following URL: http://www.u2-partners.org/syseng/SE-Inputs-to-U2P.htm .

Alan Moore also provided a presentation to the SE DSIG at the Washington OMG meeting on some of his concepts which he hoped to include as part of the 2U Superstructure Submission. This is available at the following URL, along with the other collaboration activities: http://syseng.omg.org/SE_DSIG_Coordination/SE%20DSIG%20Coordination.htm .

On a separate note, Ed Barkmeyer (NIST) provided information relative to the recent draft of "DTR ISO/IEC 19760 - Systems Engineering A Guide for the application of ISO/IEC 15288 System Life Cycle Processes". This document was put out for comment on December 16, 2002 by ISO committee SC7/JTC1, and is intended to be a supplement to the recently released ISO/IEC 15288 Standard on System Life Cycle Processes. Each of you may want to review this document when it is available, and provide comments back to ISO through your company or organizational channels, or possibly through INCOSE. The ISO document has been posted to the OMG site with the document number syseng/2003-01-01 at URL http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?syseng/2003-01-01 .

Look forward to seeing you at the OMG Burlingame meeting or INCOSE IW meeting.
